Donald Lamont served in the Diplomatic Service from 1974 to 2006. In his talk on 20 November he aims to show the variety of tasks that can present themselves in the practice of diplomacy. For him, these included, in Berlin, managing the immediate consequences of the Fall of the Wall. In Sarajevo, ensuring a safe visit by the Women of Srebrenica to the site of the Massacre. In the Falkland Islands, dealing with Argentine ambitions for a permanent memorial to their war dead in the Islands. In Caracas, persuading President Chavez to ease the importing of Scotch whisky. And throughout, dealing with Russian diplomats in situations from the confrontational to the cooperative.
Tea, coffee, home baking and chat will follow the Life in Diplomacy talk.
